Job Description
Position Summary
Reporting to the Administrator Long-Term Care, the Director of Care (DOC) plans, organizes, directs and supervises the activities of the Nursing Department to provide quality resident care.

Qualifications and Skills Required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
- Current certification to operate as a Registered Nurse in Ontario, and who is a member in good standing with the CNO
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Registered Nurse in the Long-Term Care sector
- A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in a Managerial or Supervisory capacity in a health care setting
- Thorough knowledge of applicable LTC legislation and knowledge of over-seeing nursing staff scheduling
- RAI/MDS training or knowledge
- Current First Aid/CPR
- Ability to work as a member of a team
- Experience in budget management
- Demonstrated leadership abilities
- Human relations skills required to handle intercessions with residents, tenants, families, staff and professionals
- Cultural sensitivity to the German/Mennonite heritage
Key Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the activities of the Nursing Department to provide quality resident care
- Be on 24 hour call for consultation and/or reporting purposes
- Assumes responsibility for the operation of the home in the absence of the Administrator Long-Term Care
- Oversees daily duty assignments and re-allocation of staff to meet changing requirements of residents
- Maintains all required records, reports, statistics, etc. for both residents and departmental personnel in accordance with policies,
procedures and legislative requirements - Informs direct care staff when a policy and procedure is to be implemented and or changed
- Provides performance management of the nursing and personal support team including ongoing evaluations
- Attends monthly meetings, prepares and presents written monthly reports
- Organizes orientation, In-service education sessions and staff meetings for the nursing department
- Has knowledge of and promotes the homes Montessori Philosophy of Care
- Is responsible for contact with the Pharmacy representative and to facilitate related In-services
- Monitors the ordering of supplies and equipment assuring careful and proper usage and elimination of waste
- Encourages staff in educational and training opportunities
- Coordinates student placements
- Liaise with the Chaplain regarding seriously ill residents
- In the event of the death of a resident, monitors that the documentation is prepared for the pronouncing physician (or the
Coroner) and that families, administrative staff and funeral directors are notified - Ensures preparation of resident’s records after death for Coroner’s online submission and filing in the resident’s medical records
- Consults with the Administrator Long-Term Care prior to release of a bed
- Liaise with Ontario Health atHome for bed matches and admissions
- Liaises with the Dietary Department as needed regarding the correct diet for each resident and the appropriate adaptive dishes, table changes etc.
- Liaises with the Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor for resident therapy and activation concerns
- Liaises with Environmental Services for scheduling and concerns related to housekeeping and laundry
- Ensures that adequate standards of cleanliness are maintained
- Liaises with Supportive Housing for emergency responses
- Assists in admission of new residents and their families to aid in their orientation into the facility
- Liaises and consults with families/residents and professionals in relation to resident care needs and department activities
- Schedules (with Nursing Clerk) and participates in Resident/Family Conferences
- Supervise and manage staff work schedules in an equitable and timely manner
- Is responsible for assisting and ensuring that documentation is done for resident care conferences
- Directs and supervises the development of nursing care plans for each resident to meet their physical, social and emotional needs
- Assists with RAI meetings of the nursing care plan which is conducted by the RAI Coordinator
- Organizes and assists as needed with Eye Clinic, Foot Care Clinic and Hearing Aid Clinics
- Maintains and upholds a spirit of cooperation with other departments and Supervisors to ensure resident needs are met
- Maintains contact with residents to ensure adequacy of care and is available to families for consultation as needed
- Actively participates in planning and carrying out corporate events and activities (Staff Appreciation, Memorial Service, and Resident Banquets)
- Ensures the proper maintenance of accurate confidential records and reports as required by Ministry guidelines and in accordance
with good nursing procedure. Delegates and monitors accurate documentation of resident care and behaviors - Monitors and controls, requisitioning and reallocation of drugs and narcotics as required in accordance with Ministry regulations, as well as keeping of necessary records. Is responsible for Narcotic distribution
- Assists with the interpretation and implementation of policies and established standards as set out by relevant and pertinent legislative bodies (CNO, MOHLTC, Health and Safety Act etc.)
- Participates in and maintains knowledge of Labour and Union Relations
- Has and maintains knowledge of the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) and the Internal Responsibility System (IRS)
- Completes other duties as assigned by the Administrator Long-Term Care
